How we handle your data

Your family's calls.
Our hardware.
Nobody else's.

Most consumer services route your voice data through Amazon, Google, or Microsoft. We built around a different principle from the start.

The honest part

We use AI. Here's exactly where it runs — and where it doesn't.

We want to be upfront: FamPhone uses AI for some optional features — converting voicemails to text. We're not hiding that. What's different is where that AI runs.

Our AI processing happens on our own hardware in Grimsby, Ontario. Not a cloud API. Not a rented GPU in Virginia. Open-source speech recognition software we control, running on a machine in our own facility. Your family's voices go there and nowhere else.

The service itself — your account, contacts, call records — runs on our servers in Montreal, Quebec. Two locations. Both ours. Both in Canada.

Exactly what AI does here

All behind the scenes. None of them touch your child's phone.

Voicemail-to-text

When someone leaves a voicemail on your FamPhone number, we transcribe it so you receive a text message with a preview and the callback number. This runs every time a voicemail comes in — it's a core feature of the service, not an option you toggle.

No AI ever interacts with your child.

There is no voice assistant on the desk phone. No chatbot. No AI that responds to or speaks with your child in any way. The technology on the child's side is a phone. It connects them to a real person. That's the full extent of it.

Where your data lives

Two locations. Both in Canada.

Your account, contacts, call records Montreal, Quebec

Canada's federal privacy legislation (PIPEDA) governs how we handle this data. Your family's information doesn't cross the border.

What we don't send your calls through

The short version: not Amazon, not Google, not Microsoft, not OpenAI.

Amazon Transcribe / AWS
Google Speech-to-Text
OpenAI Whisper API
Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services
Any third-party AI provider
Any US-based cloud AI

If that ever changes — if we decide to use an outside AI provider for anything — we'll tell you before it happens, in plain language, and give you a real choice about it.

We built this service for families we know personally. That shapes how we treat the data.

Questions about any of this? Ask us directly. We'd rather explain it than have you wonder.
